mondays seem to be the most grueling and longest days. not only do they carry the stigma of being the first day of the work week, mondays constantly test my mental and physical stability. most mondays demand gym time during lunch and practice at night, starting new projects at work and finishing marketing projects for derby at home, and never is there time for a proper dinner. at the end of the night, i'll call conor to catch up and say goodnight, and he'll wonder how i do it all in one day.
this monday has almost pushed me over the edge. the day was full of distractions, indecision, lost keys, a dead car battery, chaos, hits, falls, and an empty fridge.
but the day is almost over. and tomorrow is already just around the corner. there is no need to look back at today and worry about all the things that went wrong. as conor would say:
forward progress.

happy friday.

the first poster in the 2011 series is finally finished. the fury get the season opener poster for winning the ivy king cup championship. get ready to admire these on the streets very soon.
ice skating and brinner. i'd say it was a good birthday.
not to be bias (since i own a nissan) but the new commercial for the juke is quite stellar. i like to think my day plays out like this every day.

the windy city rollers get featured today as the league of the month by WFTDA. i get a little shoutout for doing all the design work for Uproar on the Lakeshore. if you haven't already planned on going, i highly suggest it. the competition is going to be fierce, fiercer than you've ever seen.

i spotted this MGMT poster by Todd Slater. things with waves always catch my eye, but i am in severe like with this one. note that the yetti is wearing a sharktooth necklace!

the invitation i made for our annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner. i'm looking forward to getting all our old friends in the same place at one time again.
for some reason i told conor that i wanted to do a creepy space movie week. they are getting creepier and gorier. maybe with halloween coming up it will be a good excuse to scare myself, but then again, i'd like to get some sleep.

conor has asked me several times if i was sure i wanted to re-watch this. i only have one scene in my memory, but it doesn't include all the blood and gore that everyone keeps telling me about. i hope i will be brave enough tonight to put the dvd in the player.

uh oh. there are some things that make you cringe. like seeing a mouse run across the floor as you are eating dinner in a nice restaurant. or seeing technology giants take on letterpressing. will this give small letterpress companies some serious competition?

there are some days where i feel like i'm always running. and i've got to fucking win.

oh, how i love baking. Sweet Fine Day made the cutest kitchen conversions poster that i would love to hang in my kitchen. find it here.
when you start to play a sport that challenges every muscle in your body and you feel like you are going to have a mental breakdown from the pain, you start to understand how far you can push yourself and impress your captains, your teammates, your friends and your fans. you also become a sucker to how impactful nike ads start to become. the newest campaign completely clicked with something that was happening in practice today.
if you wait for the right moment, you get the boom.

back in high school, i used to belong to a program called tech prep. the program was meant to integrate extra technology and skill related classes into our schedule and make us smarter and savvier for the future. i don't know how much "extra" i ended up learning, but i mostly remember going on field trips to cemeteries and sailing boats when other students couldn't (the principal at the time banned field trips and made us the exception) and that they tested block scheduling on us (we always got yelled at for being in the hallway during regular class periods). there was one class where we learned how to use autoCAD and another where we learned to sew. one of the first classes we had to take was a typing class. we had to use these massive electric typewriters that always froze when you went over 50 wpm, and we learned how to type with more than our index fingers. there are two things that i remember most from that class. 1. i was in this class as we watched the verdict of the O.J. Simpson trial on the classroom television and 2. typing "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" for an hour straight.
BIS publishers has a typeface memory game that i adore and severely want. not only does it bring back such fond and odd memories of high school, but i'm totally geeked that it is a typeface guessing game. i take pride that my friends ask me for font names all the time, so i should buy this to keep sharp, right?
it seems like roller derby has not only taken up my free time, it has taken up my freelance time. the women's flat track championships are being hosted by my league this year, so i've been occupied making everything ready for it.

Jurassic Park the Musical Part 1 from Mark Hennings on Vimeo.
one of my all time favorite movies has been turned into a musical by some awesome college students in nebraska. i'm jealous.
make sure you get to part 3 (about 20 minutes in) for "raptors in the kitchen." it is just the best scene in the entire movie.
there are days when i have an idea, but then i begin to doubt that it is a good one.
for a little inspiration, i read an interview with adventurer bertrand piccard. he was the first person to fly around the world in a hot air balloon and now plans to do it again in a solar-powered aircraft. when asked about the importance of an idea, he said, "i don’t think ideas are the most important thing. what’s difficult is implementing them. To do that, we have to learn to get rid of our certainties and habits."
i hope you feel the need to take a leap of faith.

i want to buy this workday recovery kit from KnockKnock in bulk and give it to my co-workers. i suspect this might raise company moral more than a quarterly meeting and a pep talk.

when donny glover isn't struggling to leave phone messages, he's rapping under the name childish gambino and offering his album up for download here.
oh troy, could you be a triple threat?

i forgot to post this, but i made this a while back. feel free to download the wallpaper version here.

maybe newspapers should stop laying off the fact checkers. labels you could probably find handy some day, from tom scott.
everyone is trying to reinvent retro these days, but only a select few get it right. i am in love with this editorial shoot by Mierswa-Kluska for Plaza Watch magazine.
